Jumps Season - At The Races

Dan Skelton Stable Tour

The Alcester trainer enjoyed a milestone season last term and here he shines a light on his string which look set to further advertise his talents in 2019/20.
  • Features

Dan Skelton is clearly the emerging young force in the Jumps division and his 205 winners and £2,301,457 in prize money in the 2018-19 clearly smashed his previous best of 156 winners and £1,329,107 of the previous season.

The Alcester trainer notched his first Grade 1 success from his Lodge Hill base when Roksana took the OLBG Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in March and there was a second victory in the County Hurdle (Superb Story successful in 2016) when Ch’tibello confirmed stable expectations in one of the most competitive races at the Festival.

Skelton has already notched 48 winners this term before the Jumps season gets going in earnest and with several new recruits to add to an imperious team it looks likely that the Saturday victors will be there in abundance.

Dan said: “We have a good bunch of horses and I am very happy with them and they all look well and are in good health. Long may it last and we will just get on with them now.

Skelton kindly spoke to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about those that he hopes can advertise his immense talents again this term.

152-rated chaser. Successful in three of his 5 starts last season and ended his campaign with a seven-length success from Sizing Granite in a listed handicap chase at Ayr (2m 4 1/2f) in April off a mark of 142.

Trainer Says:

I am happy with him and he will hopefully start in the Old Roan at Aintree. He had a very productive year last year and just seemed to come of age. I am really looking forward to running this horse over the National fences. We avoided them at Aintree in the spring as the ground was too soft and we went to Ayr and won a listed handicap so we did the right thing there. I would love to run him round Aintree on good ground one day and hopefully that is where he will end up in the Spring. He hates Cheltenham for whatever reason and won’t be going there again but he has done really well away from there.

Form Profile:

157-rated hurdler. Scored by a length and a half from We Have A Dream in the County Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham (2m 1f) in March after a wind operation and solid effort in the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle at Liverpool (2m 4f) in April when third, beaten a length and a quarter, to Supasundae.

Trainer Says:

I am delighted with him and he will either start in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle or the International at Cheltenham. The handicapper isn’t going to forgive him for winning the County Hurdle but having said that he hadn’t won for a long, long time and he had given him a chance to win a handicap and he did. He couldn’t win the Graded race against the Grade 1s and 2s but we are going to have to go back and try it again as his handicap mark is beyond him.

Form Profile:

153-rated chaser. Gained his third success of last season when beating Rocky’s Treasure 13 lengths in a handicap chase at Cheltenham (3m 2f) in April off a mark of 142.

Trainer Says:

He ended up with a real high rating last year after winning at Cheltenham in April. We are going to start back in a three-mile handicap chase at the October meeting and see where we stand. If he could win off his current mark, I would be delighted but surprised and I think the handicapper is going to have to relent. I think that day at Cheltenham in the spring when he won, I think on the day he was the only one running. I would love to be proved wrong and he is progressive, and I think he can compete at a high level but there is a difference between competing off a 145 than 153.

Form Profile:

152-rated hurdler. Winner of the Betfair Exchange Trophy (Handicap Hurdle) at Ascot (1m 7 1/2f) in December when beating Lisp two and a quarter lengths off a mark of 145. Finished fifth, beaten 12 ½ lengths to Scarlet Dragon on his reappearance in a listed handicap hurdle at Market Rasen (2m 1/2f) in September off his current mark.

Trainer Says:

I was happy with him the other day at Market Rasen and he ran well. The handicapper obviously thinks that fifth place is an incredible achievement and didn’t drop him a pound which I found baffling. The handicapper isn’t giving this horse a chance to win and he is running well. Having said that he did win two big handicaps last year, so I suppose he was always going to suffer for those victories. However, the fact of the matter is that the handicapper isn’t giving him a chance to win at the moment.

148-rated chaser. Won three of her four starts last season and ended her campaign with a three and three quarter length victory from Dandy Dan in a novices handicap chase at Ayr (3m) in April off a mark of 139.

Trainer Says:

She is another who had delighted me, and she has been working really well. She goes for the Charlie Hall at Wetherby. She is taking on a lot there and after that I would she would go back to contesting mares’ chases. If she was to win the Charlie Hall, then we would have a re-think. She was very good last year in her first season over fences.
